Meet Laura
Animal Professional
Hi! I’m Laura, the owner of Proper Pets Training and Consulting, LLC. I’ve had a passion for animals for as long as I can remember. I had many pets as a child (dogs, cats, birds, rodents, reptiles, even a pot-bellied pig) and I carried my love for caring for them into my professional career. In 2006, I graduated with an Associate degree in Animal Husbandry, Animal Training, and Wildlife Education from The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, Ca. I became a Senior Animal Trainer at a large zoo and worked there for over 17 years. Prior to that, I worked for a major retail pet store as an operations manager and store dog trainer for 11 years. I started my career as a teenager working at a dog boarding and breeding center. Over the years I have developed an advanced knowledge of animal behavior, providing exceptional care, and an expertise in training a wide variety of animal species.
My goal as an animal trainer is to utilize those skills and strengths to educate pet owners on why animals behave as they do and how we can adjust their environment to create more desirable behaviors. Not only am I a trainer, but I'm your coach! Together, you and I can teach your pets manners and give you the tools to teach them as they grow.
My goal as a caregiver is to relieve any stress owners may have when leaving their pets to take time for themselves! I have many years of experience administering medications, working with infant and senior animals, special needs pets, and I am pet First Aid and CPR certified. Giving animals great care is what I do best! The safety and comfort of your pets is my top priority!
I pride myself on my professionalism, my communication skills, and my ability to give skilled instructions to pet owners developing their knowledge to help all pets thrive. I am trustworthy, reliable, and honest. I am also flexible with my schedule to provide my clients with the best experience.

Don’t look any further if you are in need of a trainer for your Pup!! Laura was a grateful find for us! We adopted our pup from Guilford county shelter in Dec 2024. He was clearly a beautiful and sweet dog. But after bringing him home we realized there were things we needed to work out. We met with Laura and immediately knew she understood our needs and we felt confident she would deliver. Laura is patient and very detailed in her training. Each session she had planned what we would work on with the issues we had outlined. She would give us “homework “ to work on through the week to enforce what we had focused on. After every session she would email an overview of what we covered and would write in detail the instructions she had verbally given but would explain to keep us on track of what we needed to continue to do. It was nothing but positive and very detailed training. Woodford has grown into the most amazing family member and because of Laura’s leadership, we will continue to reinforce the lessons she taught to us as a family. Thank you Laura!-Janet W.
It is clear that Laura (Laura’s Proper Pets) cares deeply about dogs and their training. It starts with her clearly communicating about the training schedule, and being on time for every session. She has a plan for each session, and she provides verbal and email recaps of every session. We knew she would positively impact our puppy when within minutes of meeting him, she was able to get him to calm down and maintain his attention. She is both knowledgeable and personable. This is important, because a large segment of the training is for the humans. She’s able to share proper human responses to dog behaviors, and explain the reasons for them. We hired Laura for a very unexpected puppy addition to our family. We knew training was important but I didn’t realize how important it is to get a trainer that you feel like is part of the family. Laura has a great mellow temperament and ease of working even with anxious new pet parents. She is kind and patient and was able to help us and our new baby acclimate really well to us and our 3 young children. She has years of experience in the field which was obvious when things didn’t go as planned. She knew the reasons and had lots of solutions. She was great answering questions and sending amazing follow up emails when we couldn’t remember everything. Laura was the friendliest sitter for my Rottweiler, she not only took care of him to make sure he had plenty of water/food in his bowl, but she also trained him throughout the walks to fix minor behavioral issues. I fully trust Laura with my dog whole heartedly and will 100% book her again. She’s caring, leaves a very detailed dog card, and she’ll keep you updated on everything. Laura was fantastic. She gave detailed updates daily on our pets – good and bad. Laura is a fantastic pet sitter! She has many years of experience working with and around animals and I’m glad she was available to sit for my 17-year old kitty while we were out of town for 3 days. He has cancer and Laura gave him his needed medication twice a day and made sure he had plenty of food and water at all times. She spent a lot of time just giving him love, as well.
